The FP7 project Glass was carried out in 2013-2016 with Water Insight as coordinator (EU grant 313256).
Lakes are important ecosystems providing many beneficial goods and services, but they are under significant pressure from agriculture, economic development and climate change. To support efficient management of these valuable resources, a coherent and comprehensive overview of the quality status of lakes is required. Optical remote sensing techniques can improve harmonised monitoring by providing information on the spatial and temporal dynamics of water quality.
The new satellite constellations Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 provide unprecedented monitoring capabilities for inland waters thanks to the high overpass frequency of Sentinel-3 and the high spatial resolution of Sentinel-2. However, the large amounts of data they produce also pose a number of challenges: systems are needed that allow to ingest, archive, process and distribute these data efficiently.
